Perth Ontario Takes a Bold Step in Ending Poverty

Make Poverty History is a global campaign asking all the people in the world to help end poverty and the residents of Perth Ontario are proud to take part on it. In Canada, it was launched in 2005 with the support of both public and private groups like trade unions, church organizations, the academe, literary figures, artists and sports leaders.

Standing up to make a difference

“STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION NOW TO END POVERTY” is a three day affair that started in 2006 all over the world with 23.5 million people. Last year, almost 116.9 million people took part in the campaign which broke the Guinness Book of Records for the largest human mobilization to date.

Another record breaking event

This year, Make Poverty History organizers are hoping for another record breaking attendance. Last October 16th, 17th and 18th, people from all over Canada, including residents of Perth Ontario, stood against poverty.

To represent the one in six people who live in poverty among nations, every one in six students at St John School in Perth Ontario painted white stripes on their faces. On the 3rd day of Stand Up, these Perth students also wore white shirts and created a white giant circle around their school tracks. The white circles symbolized the Make Poverty History bands.

More than a 3-day activity

Stand Up activities at home will convince our very own political leaders to live up to the UN Millennium Development Goals in alleviating poverty right here in Canada. Hopefully things will be better for our fellow Canadians especially since the health and living conditions of our very own Aboriginal Canadians have been getting worst.

The Stand Up activities last October 16-18 was not only directed to increase poverty awareness among Perth Ontario residents but also among individuals, families and societies around the world and our locals are more than proud of doing their part – no matter how little it may be – in the fight against poverty.

It goes without saying that the real essence of the Perth Autumn Studio Tour is the creative process of producing fine pieces of art, giving insight to others on work methods as well as the dedication and love for the craft. Although some studios will give demonstrations, some pieces are just handed over to the guest artists and studios. To give you a sneak peak into how the craftsmen work, here’s a PHOTO GALLERY you can check out.

For this year, 19 artists from all over Perth Ontario and parts of Eastern Ontario gather to join the tour. With over seven different rural studios scattered near Perth, each stop is very accessible and matched beautiful scenery. Have a look at the demonstrations some stops offer or enjoy the featured fairytale-like garden walks.

A few of the media featured on tour are jewelry, etchings, pottery, furniture, sculptures and wood carvings. To give you an idea on where the stops are located, click on the MAP provided.

Without a doubt, the Perth Autumn Studio Tour is an extra special showcase for contemporary works of art. This highly respected team of artisans was recognized by the Ontario Arts Council, with an award for the high standard of work displayed over the previous decade. What’s more, it was the only studio in Ontario to receive such an honor.
